The Volkswagen’s R400 “Super Golf” axed in the wake of Dieselgate

Talk about teasing. A recent report by AutomotiveNews says Volkswagen is apparently accelerating the long-awaited Golf R400 as a result of damage to Dieselgate.

The sad news, apparently, was voiced by some “insiders” in the company after the former head of research and development department, Heinz-Jacob Neusser, confirmed that the Golf R400 concept, presented at the Beijing Auto Show, was preparing for production some time ago.

But now this does not seem to happen at all.

This news came after Volkswagen reported even greater losses and the need to allocate more money to the “aid” fund, which is used to solve the problems that plague the automotive giant in Wolfsburg. So far, Dieselgate’s damage estimates have leveled off, costing the company $ 11.2 billion.

This so-called “Super Golf” would have been equipped with the most powerful Volkswagen four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 400-420 hp. The name was also changed to R420 because they produced 420 horsepower. in the production model. He would handle power with 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a DSG gearbox. There were even prototypes based on the latest Golf R.

But now this will no longer happen, as the business case for the Golf R420 has been completely exposed by Dieselgate.

So it is. Are there any alternatives? Fortunately, yes.

Volkswagen said that instead of the R420, they want to focus on the next-generation flagship Golf R, which could lose about 300 pounds and still get a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharger than the one currently offered.
